Turning Back Time on Email Marketing

What if you could turn back time on everything you did in your first year to build your list and make some extra money?

That’s what we asked ChatGPT.  Give us 10 items you’d wish you’d known.

Many of it’s suggestions are the same ones from the last post I wrote for you, so here are the suggestions I found most relevant:

Quality Over Quantity:

The quality of subscribers often outweighs quantity. Marketers may learn that it’s more beneficial to have a smaller, engaged audience rather than a large, disinterested one. Removing inactive subscribers and focusing on active ones can improve performance metrics.

Author Edit:  When my list was tiny, I’d outperform other affiliates that had 10 times the size of my list.  That’s because mine was entirely made up of customers and I did my best to help them.  It made a massive difference.

Regulations and Compliance:

Understanding and adhering to email marketing laws, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the CAN-SPAM Act, is crucial. These govern how you can acquire contacts and send emails, and non-compliance can lead to fines and damaged reputation.

Author Edit:  Glance over the email marketing laws and rules that apply to you.  Some are common sense, but others are pretty crazy.  It’s worth it to spend an hour glancing them over.

The Power of A/B Testing:

A/B testing different elements of emails (such as subject lines, content, and calls to action) can provide valuable insights into what resonates best with the audience and enhances engagement and conversion.

Author Edit: Most autoresponder services do not allow you to do this.  If that’s the case for you, simply move onto the next one.

Effective Use of CTAs:

Crafting clear and compelling Calls to Action (CTAs) can substantially boost click-through and conversion rates. Knowing how to strategically place and phrase CTAs is essential for motivating subscribers to take desired actions.

Author Edit:  Calls to action are important, just remember that “reply to this email”, “don’t forget about EVENT”, and “watch for my next email” are as important as “click here”.  Change things up as often as you can to keep readers engaged.

Data Analysis:

Understanding and effectively utilizing data analytics to track and analyze the performance of email campaigns is key. Paying attention to metrics like open rate, click-through rate, and conversion rate can guide adjustments for future campaigns.

Author Edit:  I just posted to FB that it’s hard to mess things up when data drives your decisions.  It’s absolutely true. The more you let data guide you, the more you’ll win in business.

Email Deliverability:

Ensuring that emails actually reach the inbox, rather than the spam folder, is crucial. This involves understanding and optimizing factors like sender reputation, email authentication, and content quality to improve email deliverability.

Author Edit:  To keep hitting inboxes, keep complaints as low as you can by being consistent.  You’ll also want to make sure you’re setup to send “business email” via server settings on your web host.

Personalization and Relevance:

Personalizing email content to the individual recipient as much as possible enhances engagement. Using data to tailor content, offers, and messaging to each subscriber can make emails significantly more effective.

Author Edit:  This is different from what I was talking about in the previous part.  The more you can create personalized experiences, the better people will feel about you and trust you.  If they trust you, they’ll buy from you more often.

The individual items above are copy and pasted directly from ChatGPT while the “Author Edit” notes are from me.

While there are a ton of things you’ll figure out about list building, email marketing, and generating sales, this is a good starting point of things you may not have considered up to now.
