A Simple Strategy To Build Your List For Free

You already know that building your list via advertising works.  You pay for traffic and send it to your lead capture page.  A certain percentage of that traffic will sign up for your list and some of those will end up buying what you’ve got for sale.

What you may not be aware of is a simple, fool-proof strategy you can use to build your list for free.

Here’s how it works:

The Backwards Slide

Free traffic is almost always based upon content.  For this content, you want to do something very specific to build it.

First, you’re going to want to know keyword phrases that your audience associates with your products.  You’re going to use those to describe the content you create.

Next, go backwards from what you have inside of your giveaway.  The type of content (audio, video, text) doesn’t matter, all that matters is what you’re promising and how you deliver it.

Now, create content that leads directly to your giveaway.

This can be done either by pulling out small pieces of your content or by solving smaller problems that lead to the one you solve in your freebie.

Content Marketing Made Easier?

There are 2 paths to take with this strategy:

  1. Aim for search engine rankings and traffic
  2. Ignore search engines and focus on internal search of the content sites.

If you’re aiming for search engine traffic, every piece of content you post online has to be unique.  It requires a lot of extra work, but if you end up ranking for terms that get searched for regularly, you can get a lot of free leads.

Ignoring the search engines makes the strategy much easier, but you have to make sure any link you put up to your landing page is “no followed”.  This blog post explains how to do it (in far more detail than I ever thought it could need).

Internal Search Functions Matter

My general preference is to ignore SEO and put the right content in as many locations as I can.

The most popular content based websites get tens of thousands of visitors per day and some of those visitors will want to know more about the topic that leads to your products.

Ensuring you have content on their site will drive you free targeted traffic for years.

The Top Sites To Use

Take the content you’ve created and post it on top content directories.  YouTube, Slideshare, EzineArticles, Medium, LinkedIn, and Facebook should all be at the top of your lists.

Every market will also have niche specific directories that can send a huge amount of traffic.  Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Business Insider are a few of the ones I’d use if I was looking to build the T4ME list.

Is This Enough?

Never!  Adding in some content marketing to your list building strategy is simple common sense.  You want your email list to be growing at all times to account for people leaving and unsubscribing.

In business, I prefer to never put all of my eggs into a single basket.

Keep your advertising running as long as you can turn it into a profit, but throw in a little content marketing, too.
